Privacy and cookies

What to Watch asks for no account and doesn't sell your data. Here is what we keep and why.

Necessary cookies

The site doesn't work properly without them, so they need no consent: the session and form protection (what-to-watch-session, XSRF-TOKEN) and the services you picked (wtw_services).

Only once you save a title to your favorites or say how it was, we keep an anonymous id for this device (wtw_visitor, 2 years) so your favorites and reactions stay yours. It holds no name, email or anything else about you.

Statistics: Google Analytics, only with your consent

If you accept, we use Google Analytics (through Google Tag Manager) to see which pages are read and where visitors come from. Google then sets the _ga and _ga_* cookies. If you reject or don't choose, nothing from Google loads.

You can change your choice any time from "Cookie settings" at the bottom of the page; rejecting also deletes the _ga cookies.

Visits we count ourselves

We count each title's visits and clicks, for the "Trending" lists, without cookies. To avoid counting twice we use a daily fingerprint (IP address and browser, passed through a one-way function with a key that changes every day), which we don't keep.

What you type in search and in "What to watch tonight"

The text is sent to an AI service so we understand what you're after. We send nothing about you, and we keep the answers a while without tying them to any visitor.

Hosting

The site runs through Cloudflare, which protects it and makes it fast; like any web server, it sees the IP address of whoever visits.
